The former vegetable garden located near the peacock and chicken pens has been turned into a pollinator garden - a haven for the bees, birds, and butterflies. Our pollinators are under a lot of stress and coupled with a desire to add a nice feature to the farm for visitors to enjoy lead to the idea of creating this pollinator garden. It has a variety of plants and bushes to attract and feed the bees, birds and butterflies along with a water source. An old coop area that is no longer used was also restructured to allow a shady area as well as a nook for people to have a seat and relax.
A particularly interesting feature is how wool was used in the construction. Normally to emplace stepping stones you put down construction paper for a base, followed by small stones and then the large stepping stones. In this case the base was wool - old wool we have collected thru the years that is not suitable for the shop. This process is starting to be used in England and Scandinavia; it works well, is sustainable and environmentally friendly.
This is available for anyone to enjoy on the days the farm/shop is open: Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10 to3. There is a nice walkway that extends from the barn/shop, thru a few gates, into the area. If you do come by to enjoy this, mind the chickens as they are roaming in the outer area.
